The Heritage
Three Hundred Years Of People Meeting Here
South Creek Retreat, famously known as 'The Old Chequers', is a historic property with a fascinating past. Originally operating as the Chequers Inn, it served as a central gathering place for the village of South Creake for over 300 years, with close ties to the neighbouring Pinchens Brewery.
In 1784, a sale of copyhold land in South Creake was held at the house of Robert Oliver, known by the sign of the Chequer. The inn remained a hub of village throughout the 19th century, before closing in 1963. Following extensive renovations, the building was transformed into a luxury holiday home, combining modern comfort with its historic character.
Today, we offer two distinct experiences: leisure stays under our heritage name, The Old Chequers, and bespoke corporate packages under South Creek Retreat.

Six en-suite bedrooms, each named after the villages and beaches of this stretch of North Norfolk. Two of the super kings convert to twins, so the house flexes to the shape of your team.

Wheelchair-friendly en-suite wet room with a step-free shower, handrail and removable shower chair. This room has its own private entrance from the driveway.
Sleeps up to 8 with a bed each — six en-suite bedrooms, two of which split into twins. A bunk bed in the Holkham dressing room and a sofa bed in the ante-room take extra guests beyond that. The ground floor bedroom is wheelchair-friendly, with its own step-free entrance from the pebbled driveway and a wet room with a handrail and removable shower chair.

Booking and pricing
What is the cost of hosting a retreat?
Every retreat is priced around your dates, group size and the extras you'd like. Send us your dates and headcount at bookings@creekretreats.co.uk and we'll reply with a tailored quote, usually within one working day.
What's included in the price?
Exclusive use of the whole house and gardens, all bedrooms made up with premium linen, towels and robes, uncapped fibre wifi, the working and meeting spaces, the hot tub and games room, and a final clean. Catering, activities and transportation are quoted separately.
Can you invoice our company?
Yes we are able to invoice the Company and you are welcome to send over the details once the quotation has been accepted.
What is your cancellation policy?
A full refund if you cancel 30 or more days before arrival, 50% if you cancel 7 or more days before, and no refund within 7 days of arrival.
Is there a minimum stay?
We have a 2 night minimum stay requirement for the Retreat

Is the venue accessible?
Yes, the Burnham Market bedroom is on the ground floor, with a step-free, wheelchair-friendly wet room. All other bedrooms are upstairs.
Working at the venue
Is the wifi good enough for video calls?
Yes, uncapped high-speed fibre runs throughout, suitable for video calls, cloud work and hybrid meetings.
Where can we hold meetings?
The dining table seats up to 14 for meetings, presentations and working lunches. For breakouts there's a media lounge with a 70-inch screen and surround sound, a glass conservatory, a library for quiet work, and a dedicated workspace for private calls.
Can we present from a laptop?
Yes, there are several smart TVs for presenting and screen sharing. Any additional extras such as flipcharts and markers are available upon request and at an additional charge.
Catering
Can we self-cater?
Yes. The kitchen is professional grade, with double dishwashers, generous fridge space, buffet platters, barware, and a Nespresso machine and drinks stations. There's indoor dining for 14, plus deck and courtyard dining and a BBQ.
Can you arrange catering or a private chef?
Yes, from working lunches to private dining. We'll quote based on your menu and numbers.
Can we eat out as a group?
Yes. The Ostrich Inn is a short walk away, and Burnham Market, 8 minutes' drive, has Socius, No. Twenty9 and The Nelson. The White Horse at Brancaster Staithe is a favourite for seafood. We recommend booking group tables well ahead.
Getting there and arrival
How far is it from London?
About two hours' drive. By train, King's Lynn (with trains from London King's Cross) is about 25 minutes away by taxi.
Can you arrange transport?
Yes, private transportation can be arranged and quoted as part of your retreat.
What time can we arrive and leave?
Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. If you'd like to start your first session earlier, let us know and we'll do our best to arrange it.
Is there parking?
The driveway takes up to four cars, with more space on the road and by the village green.
Team-building and activities
What can we do on site?
The wood-fired hot tub seats eight, and there's a games room with pool table, arcade console and darts, a courtyard fire pit and a private walled garden with the River Burn running through it.
Can you organise team activities?
Yes. We can arrange coastal walks, historic site tours and boat trips, plus adventure, creative and cultural, and wellness experiences, all quoted to suit your group.
What's nearby?
Holkham Hall and its ropes course and zip wires (10 minutes), Creake Abbey ruins (5 minutes), Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham beaches (10 to 15 minutes), Blakeney seal trips and RSPB Titchwell Marsh. For wet weather: bowling and laser tag in Fakenham, escape rooms and pottery painting.

Can we host an event or client dinner?
Yes, with our prior written agreement. Please ensure to advise us of this when you enquire.
Can we smoke?
No, the venue is non-smoking, inside and out.
Can we bring a dog?
Yes, up to three pets, by prior arrangement, at £25 per pet.
